Panini America 2013-14 National Treasures Hockey Treasued Steel (17)

Sometimes, the term “cutting edge” can be a figurative description; sometimes, it’s meant to be literal. In the rarest of circumstances, though, it’s both — and that’s certainly the case with Panini America’s 2013-14 National Treasures Hockey. One of the most anticipated trading cards releases of this or any other year has generated considerable pre-release buzz already — and the product isn’t slated to release until late August.

Today, we’re showcasing yet more images that serve to substantiates the hype: The cutting-edge (literally and figuratively) and quite brilliant Treasured Steel insert featuring pieces of acetate-encased game-used skate blades from some of the best players in the NHL.

But what a way to go . . .

Earlier this week, Panini America HQ was on the receiving end of a spectacular first shipment of 2013-14 National Treasures Hockey cards. The cards were quickly counted, cataloged and QC’d before being expedited to the players on them to receive on-card autographs. Luckily, Panini America NHL Brand Manager Chris Barr tipped me off to the cards’ arrival so I could snap a few pre-ink pics before the cards got sent out.

Last Wednesday, it was unclear if Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen would even be able to play after dealing with concussion symptoms. It turns out that he played well enough to head the NHL’s three stars of the week alongside second-place finisher Adam Henrique and third-place finisher Darcy Kuemper.

Franzen, 34: Scored three goals and two assists for five points in two games. His hat trick helped Andrew Hammond notch his first NHL appearance. He also got into a war of words with Ottawa Senators forward Chris Neil, who called him “gutless” for backing down from a fight. Franzen clearly got the last laugh as Detroit won both of its games.

He has 28 points in 33 games this season.

Henrique, 24: The New Jersey Devils forward might have fresher legs after the Olympic break, as he recorded three straight two-point games for six points in…

The Stars hope to tighten their loose grip on a wild card spot in the Western Conference. They’ve been a team altered considerable by a trade in the summer, as Tyler Seguin has made the star jump many hoped for.

Speaking of trades, Buffalo truly moves on from that big Ryan Miller trade on Monday. Jhonas Enroth will play ahead of newly traded Jaroslav Halak while Chris Stewart hopes to make an impact in Buffalo, even if his stay with the Sabres may be notably brief.
